Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT)

Why take the CLBPT?

The Canadian Language Benchmarks or CLBs are used in Canada to teach and test language learning for adults. It is important for you to understand the CLBs if you plan to go to English class, train, look for work or study at a college or university.

Who is the CLBPT for?

Designed for adult learners (18+), the CLB placement test is an appropriate resource to inform clients about their personal language learning needs and for goal-setting. We use the results to place you in programs such as the Language Instruction for Newcomers in Canada (LINC) and English as a Second Language (ESL).

You may be eligible for a free language assessment and classes if you are one of the following:

  • A permanent resident of Canada
  • A protected person ( A refugee with a Notice of Decision)
  • A Canadian citizen born outside of Canada
  • An individual awaiting statutory CIC checks
  • A Nova Scotia nominee
  • A PR applicant with a valid work permit
  • An Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) candidate and a dependent(s)
  • An international graduate with a valid work and graduate permit

How to get started?

You will need to make sure that you have two hours of your time available to do the test. There are three options for taking the test:

3 Options for taking the CLBPT

  • HRM Onsite - a face-to-face meeting with an assessor in our office in Halifax
  • Rural In-Person - a face-to-face meeting with an assessor in your area
  • Rural Online - the test is taken on the computer from your home or at a proctor site in your area of residence
